Seniors and Law Enforcement Together

S.A.L.T.

The Senior Services Unit of the Athens County Sheriff’s Office coordinates with law enforcement and other professionals in the community who specialize in meeting the needs of seniors through planning, education, communication, cooperative strategies, and supportive services.

What is S.A.L.T.?

  • To decrease crime and the “fear” of crime in order to raise livability for our seniors

  • To improve local law enforcement’s knowledge of the crime prevention needs of seniors

  • To identify the concerns of local senior citizens

  • To involve senior citizens in crime prevention and the educational efforts of S.A.L.T and to raise awareness of the community of these special issues

Athens County Sheriff Rodney Smith is seeking senior citizens, 50 years and older, who would like to donate their valuable time and talents to Athens County by sharing their life experiences with their community and by promoting safety and service programs to meet the needs of our local senior citizens.

What is S.A.L.T.'s Purpose?

Membership on the S.A.L.T. committee is mostly composed of seniors from the community and is voluntary.  Other members from the business, health care and legal sectors, service clubs and other community service agencies that are not seniors but have an interest in their safety and security are also accepted.
